Bungie Layoffs 2026: Destiny 2 Sunset Triggers Job Cuts as Marathon Becomes Sole Focus

Bungie announced a new round of layoffs today, just over two weeks after Destiny 2 received its final content update on June 9, 2026. In a statement posted to X, the studio said it "could not continue operating at our previous size."

The news follows a rapid chain of events. Within 24 hours of confirming Destiny 2 would stop receiving updates, reports surfaced that significant layoffs were coming. Compounding the cuts is the fact that Bungie isn't moving forward with Destiny 3, at least for now. The studio plans to scale down, pitch PlayStation on new project ideas, and continue developing Marathon, hoping the extraction shooter can match its critical reception with commercial success.

Bungie hasn't specified how many employees will be affected, but Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported on Bluesky that the number will be significant, impacting most of the Destiny team, some of the Marathon team, and even Sony staff who supported Bungie.

Sony Interactive Entertainment's Herman Hulst followed up with a statement on the PlayStation Studios blog, praising Bungie's decade of work on Destiny while trying to reassure fans about the studio's future. He called Destiny's impact on players and the industry remarkable and said Marathon remains an important part of Sony's portfolio. Hulst added that the team is continuing to build on the foundation laid in Seasons 1 and 2, while exploring early-stage ideas for future projects. He confirmed that Sony teams supporting Bungie will also see cuts.

Marathon remains Bungie's only active title. Even with new details emerging about Season 2, the game is still working to grow beyond its small but loyal fanbase.
