Project Zomboid's Build 42 officially leaves experimental testing and hits Steam's stable branch on July 29, 2026 as version 42.20. This is not a routine patch. The game has been rebuilt from the ground up, and players need to act before launching.
Your saves will not carry over
Build 41 worlds are completely incompatible with Build 42. Map chunks, item definitions, and crafting systems have been rewritten from scratch. Forcing an old save into the new build will break it beyond repair.
If you want to keep playing your Build 41 world, go into Steam game properties and opt into the legacy Build 41 beta branch before the update hits. Do this before launching the game.
If you have been playing the unstable 42.19 beta and want to finish your current run, switch to the frozen 42.19 branch instead, as upgrading to stable 42.20 will also break those saves.
Most importantly, back up your local Zomboid save folder before touching anything. Do not rely on cloud sync during a major migration. Copy the files manually.

What has changed
Animal husbandry is now part of the core survival loop. Players can find, breed, and manage livestock, shifting long-term play away from pure scavenging toward self-sufficient homesteading.
Farming has been overhauled entirely. Crop health, seasonal conditions, and soil fertility all need to be managed, making winter survival a genuine challenge.
Crafting and blacksmithing have been rebuilt from scratch. Players can now craft primitive tools from raw materials, forge metal, and work leather, making it possible to sustain a settlement long after every looted weapon breaks.
Lighting has been modernized. Unlit buildings and dense forests now cast pitch-black shadows, turning nighttime exploration into a far more unsettling experience.
The map has expanded significantly with new towns, wilderness points of interest, and greater building verticality. Environmental storytelling has also been added, with abandoned military evacuation sites and survival camps that show how the outbreak unfolded.
Mods are mostly broken
Nearly all Build 41 mods will fail to load in Build 42. The core inventory and item systems have been rewired, and mod creators will need to update and reupload their work to the Steam Workshop before players can use them again.
What comes next
Build 42.20 is described as a foundation rather than a finish line. The development team has committed to continued updates through the rest of 2026, targeting performance improvements, quality of life changes, and community-requested refinements. For an indie-developed title, the scope of this overhaul is remarkable, and the groundwork laid here sets up what could be the most ambitious version of the game yet.
